The "Biblical" Family Center
... a Spirit, Soul and Body Perspective

WHEN FAMILIES FAIL, THE COMMUNITY ITSELF BEGINS TO FAIL!

"Family" is a living organism that supports growth, rather than simply being a number of people in a household. It is not a manmade concept. Rather, it originates from the mind of God. Within the family unit, there is protection and nurturing and is the environment where spiritual nurturing is to begin. Parents have the responsibility of showing their children the importance of a spiritual life.

Unbroken innocence should be displayed by the unbridled laughter of children that are filled wit h hope and joy. Families, including those that are fragile, should have the freedom and safety to live and be gainfully employed without being fearful of gun shots, community violence or someone doing them harm. Children should be taken care of by their parents, family members, friends, and community. They should be guided through life in such a way that gives them the best opportunities to become well informed and productive adult people. This is the natural and holistically sound way that a person should live. We call it the sequence of life.

I have just described how it should be. … How we believe it can be.

There are communities in Charleston, South Carolina where it is not like what is described above. Children born to single head of households on the Eastside of Charleston do not (and I repeat) do not have the quality of life that affords them the privilege of growing up in a safe and nurturing environment.

Charleston is readily known for its historic charm and peaceful environment. However, with all its wealth and beauty, Charleston also has communities of people that do not live a life with such prominence and magnitude. There is another side of this beautiful city that is not as "pretty!" The overall crime rate of Charleston began to decline. However, the total crime index rate for 2004 was 597.1 crimes committed per 100,000 civilians. The United States average is 320.9 (per capita). Charleston had a total crime index rate of 430.9 per 100,000 residents for the year of 2007.

Our target community and population is the Eastside of Charleston, SC. It is not the fault of the children and families on the Eastside of Charleston that they were born into and live in conditions that pro duce negative consequences and outcomes. Nor is it a mistake, error, or blunder on their part that they are where they are. This is a community of people that has evolved over a period of time into a segment of our society that is labeled as being beyond help, restoration, or repair. They are not afforded the tools of life that are needed to equip them to reach their full potential. The statistics on the Eastside of Charleston are bleak! Our problems include 'very' early teenage pregnancy, low school commitment, low graduation rate, repeated incarcerations, and single-head of households.

We believe that every person has God given inherent value, worth, and significance. Every person deserves to have opportunities to become a responsible and informed person. Someone must answer the cry of the human hearts on the Eastside Community. If you look and listen closely, you can and will hear the tears, anguish, frustration, and disappointment of a group of people that, without the help and intervention of others, will continue to perish under the extreme pressures of these living conditions.

Compassion should move us to do something about the dilemma and tragedy in the lives of these families that are not as "fortunate."

We have an answer!

The "Biblical" Family Center provides hope and optimism to the Eastside Community of Charleston. Through its comprehensive, holistic (spirit, soul, and body), and intergenerational perspective, it helps to remove the affect that poverty has on children and families on the Eastside of Charleston.

Through our summer and after school course of action, mentoring and strengths-based program for families, the "Biblical" Family Center has created a safe space to address risky behaviors, build on protective factors, and improve relationships. We are addressing: school attachment, avoiding self-harm, positive body image, avoiding tobacco, drugs, and alcohol, communicating needs of families, making healthy choices regarding nutrition, self care, activities, abstinence, and self efficacy.

Come partner with us in making a difference where it counts!

Our mission

The Biblical Family Center mission is that these families and their children be holistically (spirit, soul, and body) nurtured by providing a safe environment where each family can be equipped and trained as well as learn how to develop a Biblical standard of living for each home.

Our vision

The Biblical Family Center vision is to assist fragile families and their children living in the Charleston Eastside community. We believe that by strengthening families, you will also strengthen and restore their community.
